Leake Academy has gone 8-2 against Newton County Academy recently and they'll look to pad the win column further on Friday. The Rebels will look to take advantage of their home field for the first time this season as they take on the Generals at 2:00 p.m.
Leake Academy lost 15-9 to Ridgeland on Thursday.
Jaxson Hatten made the most of his time in the batter's box despite the final result and went 1-for-4 with three RBI and one run. The team also got some help courtesy of Caden Stovall, who went 1-for-4 with two runs, one stolen base, and one RBI.
Meanwhile, Newton County Academy came tearing into last Thursday's matchup with three straight wins (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 5.3 runs), and they left with even more momentum. They walked away with a 9-6 win over Discovery Christian.
Taylor Burt was a major factor no matter where he played. On the mound, he tossed four innings while giving up just two earned (and one unearned) runs off two hits. What's more, he posted five strikeouts, the most he's had since back in April of 2025. He was also big at the plate, getting on base in four of his five plate appearances with two runs and one RBI.
In other batting news, Newton County Academy let Cooper Savell and Cooper Thrash run wild. Savell went 3-for-5 with one stolen base, two RBI, and one run, while Thrash went 1-for-4 with two runs, one stolen base, and one double. That double marked the first that Thrash has hit this season.
Leake Academy's loss dropped their record down to 0-2. As for Newton County Academy, their record is now 5-2.
Leake Academy skirted past Newton County Academy 6-5 when the teams last played back in February of 2024. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Rebels since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
