Zion Phillips made a big impact while hitting and pitching. On the mound, he didn't allow a single earned run while striking out 13 over seven innings pitched. Those 13 strikeouts gave him a new career-high. He was also big at the plate, going 2-for-4 with two runs, one triple, and one double.
In other batting news, Justin Owolabi was a standout: he fired off two home runs and three RBI while getting on base in four of his five plate appearances. Those two home runs gave him a new career-high. Jayden Garcia was another key player, going 4-for-5 with one home run, two stolen bases, and two runs.
Valley Stream Central kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 14 hits. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now got at least nine hits in eight consecutive games.
Meanwhile, Westbury had to hit the road for their first game and it wasn't the result they were hoping for. They came up short against Carle Place last Friday, falling 11-1.
Valley Stream Central's win was their sixth straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 13-0-1. The road victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 12.3 runs over those games. As for Westbury, their defeat dropped their record down to 0-1.
Valley Stream Central took their win against Westbury when the teams last played back in May of 2023 by a conclusive 15-8 score. Do the Eagles have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Green Dragons turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
