Even though Lehighton has not done well against Tamaqua recently (they were 2-7 in their previous nine matchups), they didn't let the past get in their way on Friday. Lehighton walked away with a 49-37 win over Tamaqua. Given Lehighton's advantage in MaxPreps' Pennsylvania basketball rankings (they are ranked 111th, while Tamaqua is ranked 441st), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Meanwhile, Pottsville fought the good fight in their overtime contest against Northwestern Lehigh on Saturday but wound up with a less-than-desirable result. They took a 64-59 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Tigers. Having run the score up that high, both teams probably have some extra defensive drills coming up.
Despite their defeat, Pottsville saw several players rise to the challenge and make noteworthy plays. Christian Alvarez, who scored 17 points, was perhaps the best of all. The matchup was Alvarez's seventh in a row with at least ten points. The team also got some help courtesy of Letrel Montone, who scored 15 points.
Lehighton pushed their record up to 5-1 with that victory, which was their third straight on the road. As for Pottsville, their loss dropped their record down to 4-3.
Lehighton took a serious blow against Pottsville in their previous meeting back in January, falling 56-29. Can Lehighton avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
