The Massac County Patriots will challenge the Mt. Vernon Rams at 4:30 p.m. on Friday. The teams are rolling into the game with opposing streaks: Massac County has struggled recently with six losses in a row, while Mt. Vernon will arrive with six straight wins.
On Thursday, Massac County didn't have quite enough to beat Benton and fell 11-10.
Samaia Jones made the most of her time in the batter's box despite the final result and went a perfect 3-for-3 with one home run, three RBI, and two runs. The team also got some help courtesy of Sadie Kaylor, who got on base in four of her five plate appearances with two runs, one stolen base, and one RBI.
Meanwhile, Mt. Vernon was not the first on the board on Wednesday, but they got there more often. They came out on top against Greenville by a score of 5-2.
Danicah Tobin was a major factor while hitting and pitching. She looked comfortable on the mound, not allowing a single earned run while striking out six over seven innings pitched. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't tossed less than six strikeouts in eight consecutive appearances. She was also solid in the batter's box, going 3-for-4 with one run and one RBI. That's the most hits she has posted since back in March.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Arwyn Wilkey, who went 2-for-3 with one run and one RBI.
Mt. Vernon's victory bumped their record up to 12-4. As for Massac County, their defeat dropped their record down to 10-9.
Both the two teams just can't seem to miss. Massac County has been making plenty of contact this season, having averaged 9.6 hits per game. However, it's not like Mt. Vernon struggles in that department as they've been averaging only 4.9 hits. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Massac County suffered a grim 11-3 defeat to Mt. Vernon in their previous matchup back in May of 2024. Can the Patriots avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
