The Canutillo Eagles will take on the Austin Panthers at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday. The teams are on pretty different trajectories at the moment (Canutillo has seven straight victories, Austin has seven straight defeats), but none of that matters once you're on the field.
Last Tuesday, Canutillo didn't have too much trouble with Ysleta on the road as they won 33-19.
Canutillo's win was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Mia Lopez, who scored 12 points along with 8 rebounds and 5 steals. That makes it two consecutive games in which Lopez has scored at least 25% of Canutillo's points. Another player making a difference was Rebekah Perez, who scored 7 points along with 13 rebounds and 7 blocks.
Meanwhile, things could have been worse for Austin, but they could have been a whole lot better as they took a 46-30 loss to Clint on Tuesday. The defeat unfortunately continues a disappointing trend for Austin in their matchups with Clint: they've now lost three in a row.
Canutillo's victory bumped their record up to 8-3. As for Austin, they have been struggling recently, as they've lost eight of their last nine matches, which put a noticeable dent in their 4-8 record this season.
Everything came up roses for Canutillo against Austin in their previous matchup back in November of 2022 as the team secured a 60-28 win. Will Canutillo repeat their success, or does Austin have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
