The Bayfield Wolverines will be home for the holidays to greet the Aztec Tigers at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday. Bayfield will have to bring their A-game into this one, as they are staring down a pretty big deficit in their respective state's rankings (they are ranked 305th in Colorado, while Aztec is ranked 89th in New Mexico).
Last Tuesday, Bayfield might have been a little too into the holiday spirit, gifting Monte Vista an easy 44-22 win. Bayfield has struggled against Monte Vista recently, as their matchup on Tuesday was their fourth consecutive lost matchup.
Despite the loss, Bayfield got a solid performance out of Renae Foutz, who scored nine points along with 12 rebounds and five blocks. That's the first time this season that Foutz pulled down eight or more rebounds.
Meanwhile, Aztec scored the most points they've had all season to find success on Tuesday. They snuck past Grants with a 52-46 victory. For those curious, yes, that was the biggest victory Aztec has managed all season.
Aztec relied on the efforts of Nika Mckenzie, who scored 17 points along with seven rebounds and four steals, and Camilla Dominquez, who scored 16 points along with seven steals. That's the first time this season that Dominquez scored 15 or more points.
Bayfield now has a losing record at 2-3. As for Aztec, their victory ended a seven-game drought on the road dating back to last season and puts them at 2-2.
Bayfield took a serious blow against Aztec in their previous meeting back in December of 2022, falling 51-23. The match was all but decided by halftime, at which point Bayfield was down 25-5.
