Thornton Academy hit Scarborough with a seven-run third inning on Friday, which goes a long way in explaining the final result. The Red Storm came up short against the Trojans, falling 12-6. Red Storm fans who chose to attend the game sure picked the wrong one: it was the first time the team's lost against the Trojans since on Friday.
Scarlett Floyd made the most of her time at bat despite the final result and went 2-for-4 with two runs, two doubles, and one stolen base. The team also got some help courtesy of Sophia Nelson, who went 1-for-4 with two RBI, one run, and one double.
Meanwhile, Biddeford beat South Portland 7-2 on Friday. The Tigers haven't had any issues with the Red Riots recently, as the game was their eighth consecutive win against them.
Jaylah Trottier made a splash no matter where she played. She looked comfortable on the mound, pitching two innings while giving up no earned runs off two hits. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than one earned run any time she's pitched this season. She was even better at the plate, going 4-for-5 with two stolen bases, three runs, and two RBI. Those four hits gave her a new career-high.
Trottier wasn't the only one making solid contact as five players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Gabby Smith, who went 3-for-4 with one run. Those three hits gave Smith a new career-high.
Biddeford was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .375. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as South Portland only posted a batting average of .200.
Scarborough's defeat dropped their record down to 0-3. As for Biddeford, they now have a winning record of 2-1.
Biddeford's hitters will have their work cut out for them on Monday. Scarborough has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 8 strikeouts per game. It's a different story for Biddeford, though, as they've been averaging only 4 strikeouts. Will Scarborough keep running through batters, or will the Tigers buck the trend?
Everything went Scarborough's way against Biddeford in their previous meeting back in April of 2024, as Scarborough made off with a 14-3 victory. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Red Storm since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
