The Poca The Dots lost against the Winfield Generals back in December of 2023, and unfortunately they wound up with the same result on Thursday. Poca ended up on the wrong side of a tough 43-22 walloping at the hands of Winfield. While losing is never fun, Poca can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' West Virginia basketball rankings (they are ranked 77th, while Winfield is ranked 20th).
Poca's defeat came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Maya Wick, who scored six points along with six steals. Those six steals set a new season-high mark for her. The team also got some help courtesy of Shiloh Harding, who scored three points along with 11 rebounds.
Winfield's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Antonela Johnson led the charge by scoring 11 points along with five steals. Johnson has been hot recently, having posted two or more steals the last four times she's played. Another player making a difference was Kaitlyn Sayre, who scored six points along with six steals.
This is the second loss in a row for Poca and nudges their season record down to 4-8. As for Winfield, the win (which was their fourth in a row) raised their record to 6-3.
Poca will head out on the road to face off against Scott at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday. As for Winfield, they will look to defend their home court on Tuesday against Wayne at 7:00 p.m. Wayne has been dominant on offense recently, as they've racked up an incredible 613 points over their last nine games.
