The Fort Meade Miners will take on the Santa Fe Catholic Hawks in a tournament on Tuesday. Fort Meade is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 7.5 runs per game this season.
If Fort Meade beats Santa Fe Catholic with seven runs on Tuesday, it's going to be the team's new lucky number: they've won their past two matchups with that exact score. Fort Meade beat Lakeland on Monday by the very same score they won with in their prior game: 7-5. The win was familiar territory for the Miners, who have now won three games in a row.
Fort Meade's victory was truly a team effort as five different players contributed at least one hit. One of them was Matthew Pheiffer, who went 1-for-3 with two RBI and one double. Another was Owen Harrell, who scored a run and stole a base while going 1-for-3.
Meanwhile, Santa Fe Catholic faced Bozeman in a battle between two of the state's top teams on Monday. Everything went Santa Fe Catholic's way against Bozeman as Santa Fe Catholic made off with an 11-4 win. The high-flying hitting performance was a huge turnaround for the Hawks considering their one-run performance the contest before.
Jameson McGuire spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: he surrendered four runs (all of which were unearned) on seven hits and racked up seven Ks. He has been nothing but reliable: he hasn't given up more than one walk in five consecutive appearances.
At the plate, Hudson Link and Easton Beach did most of the damage at the plate: Link went 1-for-4 with one home run and three RBI, while Beach scored a run while going 2-for-3. The team also got some help courtesy of Angel Andujar, who scored two runs while going 2-for-4.
Fort Meade's record is now 11-4. As for Santa Fe Catholic, their record is now 12-1.
The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Tuesday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. Fort Meade has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 7.7 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like Santa Fe Catholic struggles in that department as they've been averaging 7.5 strikeouts. Considering how easily both teams rack up Ks, the hitters on both teams better bring their A-game into this one.
Fort Meade couldn't quite get it done against Santa Fe Catholic in their previous matchup two weeks ago as they fell 7-4. Can Fort Meade avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
