I Section III recap Oct. 9, 2012
Mountain View extended the longest winning streak in I Section III this week by beating Red Mountain, 10-7. The win marks fifth in a row for the the Toros.
Pinnacle was the team that gained the most ground in the standings this week, jumping from third to first in the league. Earlier in the week, the Pioneers triumphed over Mountain Ridge 29-24.
Kyle Allen provided a threat through the air and on the ground as Desert Mountain fell to Highland. He completed 26 passes for 371 yards and one touchdown and also ran for 12 yards. Allen's favorite target this week was Mark Andrews, who caught 12 passes for 192 yards.
Josh Hoekstra was the most productive running back in the league this week. In 22 carries, he ran for 197 yards as Pinnacle fell to the Hawks. Teammate Michael Sanders added to the ground attack by rushing for 35 yards.
Mike Egger threw for 253 yards and two touchdowns. He went 13-38 with two interceptions.
Desert Mountain's Allen and Andrews have formed a dynamic duo this season, leading I Section III in both passing and receiving yards. Allen has thrown for 1930 yards this season, while Andrews, a 6-foot-6 receiver, has 52 catches for 971 yards. Hoekstra from Dana Zupke's team leads the league in rushing with 1109 yards.
Andrews of the Tony Tabor's team's is a few catches away from breaking 1,000 yards for the season. He needs only 29 receiving yards in this week's game against Willow Canyon to get there.
The Wolves' Allen is within 70 passing yards of surpassing 2,000 on the season coming into this week's game against the Wildcats.
A big matchup in the league this week will be when the Pioneers take on Boulder Creek. As it stands, Pinnacle is in first, while the Jaguar are in eighth.
O'Connor took down Bradshaw Mountain 44-6 last week, the largest margin of any game. Jared Melson threw for 155 yards and two touchdowns and ran for 15 yards in the win.
