Winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask McGuffey). They were the clear victors by a 17-4 margin over the Steel Valley Ironmen on Monday. The high-scoring effort was just what the Highlanders needed considering they were shut out in their previous matchup.
Makenna Crothers was a major factor no matter where she played. She looked comfortable on the mound, striking out nine batters over five innings while giving up three earned (and one unearned) runs off five hits. She has been consistent: she hasn't given up more than two walks in seven consecutive appearances. She was also solid in the batter's box, going 1-for-3 with two RBI and one run.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Mackenzie Shrader, who went 2-for-4 with four RBI, one run, and one double. That's the most hits she has posted since back in April of 2024. Kali Franks also deserves some recognition as she hit her first double of the season.
McGuffey kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 12 hits. They are a perfect 7-0 when they post 11 or more hits.
McGuffey has been performing well recently as they've won five of their last six games. That's provided a nice bump to their 10-5 record this season. Those wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 10.5 runs over those games. As for Steel Valley, they have been struggling recently as they've lost eight of their last nine contests. That's put a noticeable dent in their 2-10 record this season.
McGuffey will challenge Waynesburg Central at 4:15 p.m. on May 7. Steel Valley does not have any more games scheduled as of now.
