The Stephenville Yellow Jackets/Honeybees will look to defend their home field on Friday against the La Vega Pirates at 7:30 p.m. Expect the scorekeeper to be kept busy: if their previous games are any indication, the two teams will really light up the scoreboard.
Stephenville entered their tilt with Alvarado with four consecutive wins but they'll enter their next game with five. Stephenville breezed by Alvarado on the road to the tune of 34-7. Given Stephenville's advantage in MaxPreps' Texas football rankings (they are ranked 70th, while Alvarado is ranked 270th), the result on Friday wasn't entirely unexpected.
Stephenville's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Ryan Gafford led the charge by throwing for 209 yards and three touchdowns. Tristian Gentry was another key contributor, picking up 161 receiving yards and two touchdowns.
Meanwhile, La Vega put the finishing touches on their third blowout victory of the season two weeks ago. They were the clear victor by a 49-28 margin over Alvarado. The score at the end of the third wound up being the final score as La Vega just coasted through the last quarter.
Stephenville's win was their sixth straight on the road (dating back to last season), which bumped their overall record up to 7-2. Those good results were due in large part to their offensive dominance across that stretch, as they averaged 39.8 points per game. As for La Vega, they have been performing well recently as they've won five of their last six matches, which provided a nice bump to their 6-3 record this season.
Stephenville strolled past La Vega in their previous matchup back in November of 2022 by a score of 42-28. Will Stephenville repeat their success, or does La Vega have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
