Shelter Island is 2-8 against Smithtown Christian since February of 2019 but they'll have a chance to close the gap a little bit on Tuesday. The Shelter Island Islanders will head out on the road to square off against the Smithtown Christian Knights at 5:45 p.m. Both teams come into the contest bolstered by wins in their previous matches.
Shelter Island can finally bid farewell to their 21-game losing streak dating back to last season thanks to their game on Friday. They came out on top against Ross by a score of 50-40. The win was just what Shelter Island needed coming off of a 73-36 loss in their prior matchup.
Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Shelter Island to victory, but perhaps none more so than Hayden Davidson, who scored 19 points. As a matter of fact, that's the most points Davidson has scored all season. The team also got some help courtesy of Harrison Weslek, who scored ten points.
Meanwhile, Smithtown Christian entered their tilt with Southold with three consecutive wins but they'll enter their next game with four. Smithtown Christian enjoyed a cozy 58-43 win over Southold last Thursday. Given Smithtown Christian's advantage in MaxPreps' New York basketball rankings (they are ranked 300th, while Southold is ranked 667th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Smithtown Christian's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Lorenzo Crilly led the charge by scoring 20 points. Isaiah McCarter was another key contributor, scoring 15 points.
Shelter Island's victory ended a 11-game drought on the road dating back to last season and puts them at 1-6. As for Smithtown Christian, they have been performing well recently as they've won five of their last six matches, which provided a nice bump to their 6-2 record this season.
Shelter Island suffered a grim 88-66 defeat to Smithtown Christian in their previous matchup back in December of 2023. Can Shelter Island avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
