After a string of 11 wins, the Alma Cardinals's good fortune finally ran out on Tuesday. They suffered a rough 59-38 defeat at the hands of Amherst. The result shouldn't come as a shock considering that's the fewest points Alma has scored all season.
Despite the loss, Alma saw an underclassman step up: Zavier Mitchell scored 13 points along with five rebounds. Mitchell scored a full 34.2% of Alma's points, the fourth time in a row he's earned more than a third of the team's points. The team also got some help courtesy of Grady Faimon, who scored six points.
Alma struggled to get the ball back on offense and finished the game with only four offensive rebounds. That's the fewest offensive rebounds they've managed all season.
Alma's defeat ended a five-game streak of wins at home and dropped them to 11-1. As for Amherst, they pushed their record up to 11-1 with that win, which was their third straight on the road.
Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Alma's homestand continues as they prepare to take on Hi-Line [Eustis-Farnam/Elwood] at 7:30 p.m. on January 11th. Amherst will take on Pleasanton at TBD on Friday. Pleasanton will have to bring their A-game into this one, as they are staring down a pretty big deficit in the MaxPreps Nebraska Rankings (they are ranked 215th, while Amherst is ranked eighth).
