Bishop Montgomery, which has been a lightning rod of controversy this season, lost its opener 34-27 Saturday to Hawaii power
Saint Louis (Honolulu) in a game that was called off in the final minute following a confrontation between players and ensuing chaos.
The altercation resulted in numerous suspensions for Bishop Montgomery players.
This comes on top of five transfers being deemed ineligible by the Southern Section office for
falsifying documents.
As a result of the transfer denials, Bishop Montgomery had to bring up nine freshmen for the Saint Louis game.
Mater Dei will be left with only nine regular
season games for the second straight season. The next game for the Monarchs is
Sept. 5 at home against
Kahuku (Hawaii).
On Saturday, Mater Dei, the consensus preseason No. 1 team in the
country, built a 26-3 halftime lead against No. 11
St. Thomas Aquinas (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.)
only to see the six-time defending state champions put up 20 unanswered
points but fall short in the upset bid.
