Charlotte Latin is 1-9 against Providence Day since February of 2020 but they'll have a chance to close the gap a little bit on Friday. The Charlotte Latin Hawks will venture away from home to square off against the Providence Day Chargers at 5:30 p.m. Both come into the game bolstered by wins in their previous matches.
Last Tuesday, Charlotte Latin beat Charlotte Country Day School 56-45. The victory made it back-to-back wins for the Hawks.
Charlotte Latin's win was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Charlotte Tune, who went 8 for 13 en route to 22 points and five steals. Tune has become a key player for Charlotte Latin: the team is 14-4 when she posts at least five steals, but 2-3 otherwise. Wallace Roberts was another key player, putting up six points along with eight rebounds and five assists.
Meanwhile, Providence Day faced Cannon in a battle between two of the state's top teams on Friday. Providence Day sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 42-40 victory over Cannon. The win was familiar territory for the Chargers who have now won six matches in a row.
Charlotte Latin better focus on containing Ginny Anne Dumont and Ellie Fyans as the pair were huge in Providence Day's win. Dumont posted 16 points and six boards, while Fyans put up eight points and six rebounds. Dumont has been hot, having also posted two or more steals the last eight times she's played. Marlo Stuart also deserves some recognition as she posted her first block of the season.
Providence Day pushed their record up to 22-7 with the victory, which was their tenth straight at home. Those victories came thanks to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 51.3 points per game. As for Charlotte Latin, they are on a roll lately: they've won three of their last four contests, which provided a nice bump to their 16-7 record this season.
Rebounding is likely to be a big factor in this contest: Charlotte Latin has been smashing the glass this season, having averaged 26.2 boards per game. However, it's not like Providence Day struggles in that department as they've been averaging 28.1 rebounds. With both teams battling to corral missed shots, we'll see if one team can grab an edge.
Charlotte Latin came up short against Providence Day in their previous meeting back in January, falling 53-40. A big factor in that loss was the dominant performance of Dumont, who went 6 of 10 on her way to 14 points in addition to six boards and four steals. Now that Charlotte Latin knows the damage she can cause, will they be able to stop her this time? There's only one way to find out.
