Salesian (Los Angeles, Calif.) extended its winning streak to six games with a 62-7 victory over St. Genevieve (Panorama City, Calif.) on Saturday.
After taking the lead on a touchdown run by
Jihad Vercher in the first quarter, the Mustangs led 41-7 at the half.
Salesian expanded its lead to 48 points entering the fourth quarter. SHS scored two times in the third, including once on a touchdown run by
Marquis Ware.
Vercher was the top performer for the Los Angeles school. The senior quarterback threw two touchdowns and ran for one touchdown. He has now scored 15 touchdowns on the season.
The Valiants' lone touchdown came on a 5-yard punt return by Josh Fuglsang in the first quarter.
The Mustangs had given up an average of 15.4 points prior to the contest. St. Genevieve's seven points were well below its season average of 33.3 per game.
When the two teams played each other last season, Salesian came away with a 28-27 victory.
The defeat comes as a step back for St. Genevieve, which notched a 49-27 victory over Crean Lutheran in its previous outing.
Salesian (7-1) will play a Santa Fe game against St. Monica next week, while St. Genevieve (5-3) will take on Bellarmine-Jefferson also in a Santa Fe game.
