The Medina Mustangs will head out on the road to face off against the Akron Tigers at 4:45 p.m. on Monday. Medina will come into the matchup with an undefeated record on the line.
Medina took a eight-run loss the last time they faced off against Maryvale, but this time they managed to keep it close and that made all the difference. The Mustangs had just enough and edged out the Flyers 3-2.
Lucas Grimes tossed a big game, pitching five innings while giving up just two earned runs off two hits.
At the plate, Carter Woodworth was excellent, getting on base in three of his four plate appearances with one stolen base and one run. Camden Fike also deserves some recognition as he brought in his first RBI of the season.
Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Akron). They were the clear victors by a 15-6 margin over East Aurora on Wednesday. The win made it back-to-back victories for the Tigers.
The team relied heavily on Collin Miller, who went 3-for-6 with two triples, two runs, and two RBI. Another player making a difference was Anthony Consiglio, who went 3-for-4 with two runs, one stolen base, and one double.
Akron kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 13 hits. The team's really been improving in that area: they've now improved their hit total in three consecutive contests.
Medina pushed their record up to 7-0 with the win, which was their 13th straight at home dating back to last season. The home victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 6.9 runs over those games. As for Akron, they now have a winning record of 3-2.
The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Monday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. Medina has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 10.3 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like Akron struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 7.2 strikeouts. Considering how easily both teams rack up Ks, the hitters on both teams better bring their A-game into this one.
Medina took their win against Akron in their previous meeting back in May of 2024 by a conclusive 9-0 score. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Mustangs since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
