The Southern Bulldogs pushed their score all the way to 55 on Saturday, but even that wasn't enough to win. They fell 64-55 to South River. While losing is never fun, Southern can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Maryland basketball rankings (they are ranked 78th, while the Seahawks are ranked 19th).
Despite the loss, Southern had strong showings from Ava Wooster, who dropped a double-double on 14 points and 15 rebounds, and Sidney Shaw, who scored 18 points along with eight rebounds and two steals. As a matter of fact, that's the most points Shaw has scored all season. The team also got some help courtesy of Gabrielle Tompkins, who scored seven points along with eight rebounds.
Southern's loss dropped their record down to 7-5. As for South River, the win was the seventh in a row for them, bringing their record for this year to 14-1.
Southern will head out on the road to challenge the Cavaliers at 6:30 p.m. on Monday. Calvert has now lost eight straight, and the team is hunting for their first win since December 29. As for South River, they will look to defend their home court on Monday against the Eagles at 6:00 p.m.
