Basketball Recap: Gateway Piles Up the Points Against South Fort Myers

You're bound to get a positive result if you outscore your opponent every quarter, and that's exactly how it played out for Gateway on Tuesday. Given that consistent dominance, it should come as no surprise that they blew the South Fort Myers Wolfpack out of the water with a 55-17 final score. The Eagles have made a habit of sweeping their opponents off the court, having now won eight games by 20 points or more this season.

Gateway's win was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was V'Davrielle Johnson, who went 8 for 14 en route to 16 points along with seven rebounds and four steals. That's the most boards Johnson has posted since back in February of 2024. The team also got some help courtesy of Kenyah Moss, who dropped a double-double on 16 points and ten rebounds.

Gateway was working as a unit and finished the game with 14 assists. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as South Fort Myers only posted two assists.

Despite the loss, South Fort Myers saw an underclassman step up: sophomore Mariah Thorne dropped a double-double on ten points and 12 boards. Thorne is on a roll when it comes to rebounds, as she's now pulled down 12 or more in the last three games she's played. Another player making a difference was Phi'Dajah Stewart, who posted two points.

Gateway's victory was their ninth straight at home dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 13-5. Those victories came thanks to their defensive effort, having only surrendered 26.4 points per game. As for South Fort Myers, their defeat dropped their record down to 9-8.

Gateway wasted no time getting back out on the court and has already played their next match, a 38-25 win against North Fort Myers on the 16th. South Fort Myers has also already played their next contest, a 51-47 loss against Estero on the 16th.
