Basketball Recap: Gaston Day Takes a Loss

Gaston Day was the 59-43 winner over Westminster Catawba Christian when they last played one another back in January, but their luck changed this time around. The Gaston Day Spartans took a 52-46 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Westminster Catawba Christian Indians. The loss was a bit of a surprise, as the Spartans came into the contest with a sizable advantage in MaxPreps' basketball rankings in their respective home states (they are ranked 55th in North Carolina, while the Indians are ranked 229th in South Carolina).

When it comes to explaining why Gaston Day lost on Friday, don't look at Deshawn Coulter. Despite the final result, he posted 13 points and four steals. That's the most steals Coulter has posted since back in January of 2024. The team also got some help courtesy of Dyson Britt, who had ten points.

Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Westminster Catawba Christian to victory, but perhaps none more so than MJ Littlejohn, who went 5 for 9 on his way to 14 points. Another player making a difference was Brycen Redmon, who went 7 of 13 en route to 19 points.

Gaston Day has been struggling recently as they've lost three of their last four matches, which put a noticeable dent in their 17-9 record this season. As for Westminster Catawba Christian, the victory was the fourth in a row for them, bringing their record for this year to 12-14.

Gaston Day has already played their next game (against SouthLake Christian Academy), but no score has been uploaded at the time of writing. Westminster Catawba Christian will head out on the road to take on Gaston Christian at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Gaston Christian knows how to get points on the board -- the squad has finished with 55 points or more in their past three contests -- so hopefully Westminster Catawba Christian likes a good challenge.
