The Marathon Dolphins pushed their score all the way to 57 on Thursday, but even that wasn't enough to win. They opened the new year with a less-than-successful 68-57 loss to Key West. The loss unfortunately continues a disappointing trend for Marathon in their matchups with Key West: they've now lost eight in a row.
Despite the loss, Marathon still got an impressive performance from ADRIAN CRUZ, who scored 19 points. The match was CRUZ's third in a row with at least ten points. Another player making a difference was DAESHAWN HOLMES, who scored seven points along with nine rebounds and four blocks.
Even though they lost, Marathon were smashing the offensive glass and finished the game with 12 offensive rebounds. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Key West only pulled down 29 offensive rebounds.
Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Key West to victory, but perhaps none more so than James Osborne, who scored 18 points along with seven rebounds and six assists. The game was Osborne's seventh in a row with at least ten points. The team also got some help courtesy of DeMarcus Deroche, who dropped a double-double on 15 points and 17 rebounds.
Marathon has been struggling recently, as they've lost seven of their last eight matches, which put a noticeable dent in their 3-9 record this season. As for Key West, they now have a winning record of 5-4.
Marathon won't have much time to rest: their next contest is against Goleman at 5:00 p.m. on January 5th. As for Key West, they will head out on the road to face off against Somerset Academy at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday.
