Basketball Recap: Isaac Mccune's Big Game Can't Quite Lead Wheat Ridge over Evergreen

If Wheat Ridge was riding high fresh off their 76-22 takedown of Greeley West last Saturday, their most recent game may have dampened their spirits a bit. The Wheat Ridge Farmers fell 76-66 to the Evergreen Cougars on Wednesday. The Farmers have struggled against the Cougars recently, as the game was their seventh consecutive lost matchup.

Wheat Ridge lost despite a true team effort on offense, the best among them being Isaac Mccune, who went 7 for 16 on his way to 20 points and five assists. The game was Mccune's fifth in a row with at least ten points. The team also got some help courtesy of Amir Nix, who shot 4-for-7 from downtown and almost dropped a double-double on 15 points and nine boards.

Even though they lost, Wheat Ridge smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with ten offensive boards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least nine offensive rebounds in four consecutive matches.

Evergreen got their victory on the backs of several key players, but it was Rob Beldock out in front who went 7 of 15 en route to 21 points and seven rebounds. Drew Yager was another key player, going 8 for 20 on his way to 21 points and five boards.

Wheat Ridge's loss dropped their record down to 8-8. As for Evergreen, they have been performing incredibly well recently as they've won nine of their last ten contests, which provided a nice bump to their 13-3 record this season.

Wheat Ridge has already played their next game, a 68-45 win against Littleton on the 1st. As for Evergreen, they also didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next matchup, a 76-65 defeat against Green Mountain on the 1st.
