Senior
Mikey Williams of
San Ysidro (San Diego, Calif.) has stayed in the headlines during his wild high school basketball career thanks in part to a 77-point game as a freshman, a cross-country transfer to Lake Norman Christian in North Carolina and then a full-circle moment prior to this season, returning to the school where his prep career started.
Some of the intense scrutiny and attention Williams experienced in previous years seemed to subside this winter as San Ysidro struggled to a 9-8 start against a challenging schedule. But the Memphis signee might be ramping up for a final run in the spotlight.
In the first 15 games of the season, Williams averaged 22.3 points per game. In his last three games, he has posted totals of 36, 32 and a season-high 44 points, the latter coming in a 96-88 win over Mater Dei Catholic (Chula Vista) where he also dished out eight assists and grabbed four rebounds.
Williams was named MaxPreps National Freshman of the Year at San Ysidro in 2019-20 after averaging 29.9 points, 6.7 rebounds and 4.9 assists per game. Already a social media star before playing a game at the San Diego school, he only enhanced that status as a ninth-grader.

San Ysidro received a major boost prior to this season when five-star senior
J.J. Taylor, who will be joining Williams at Memphis, joined the program from now-defunct (
we think) Donda Academy. Taylor actually leads the team in scoring at 27.5 points per game and put up 36 in the win over Mater Dei Catholic.
This is a big week for San Ysidro with games against league rivals Montgomery (17-3) and Otay Ranch (13-7) as well a clash at home against
Bishop Gorman (Las Vegas) as part of the BorderBoyz Classic showcase event.
