The Filer Wildcats will head out on the road to square off against the Skyline Grizzlies at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday. Filer is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 8.2 runs per game this season.
For some reason, the away team has come away with the win the last five times Filer and Gooding have met, but the home crowd finally got their W on Thursday. The Wildcats fell just short of the Senators by a score of 8-6. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest loss the Wildcats have suffered against the Senators since April 21, 2022.
Ava Smith put in work while hitting and pitching. She didn't allow a single earned run while striking out six over five innings pitched. The dominant performance also gave her a new career-low in earned runs (zero). She was also solid in the batter's box, scoring a run and stealing a base while going 2-for-4.
In other batting news, Heidi Winegar was cooking despite her team's loss, scoring three runs while going 2-for-3. Alexis Gould was another key player, scoring a run and stealing a base while going 2-for-4.
Meanwhile, after soaring to 14 runs the game before, Skyline was a bit more limited in their contest on Thursday. They came up short against Bonneville, falling 9-2.
Like Filer, Skyline also got a great game from a two-way player: Maggie Young. She looked comfortable on the mound, striking out eight batters over 4.2 innings while giving up just two earned (and one unearned) runs off five hits (and only one walk). Young has been consistent recently: she hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts in three consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, going 2-for-3 with one home run and two runs.
Young wasn't the only one making solid contact as four players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Kamree Christensen, who went 2-for-3 with one RBI.
Filer's defeat was their fourth straight on the road dating back to last season, which dropped their record down to 4-8. As for Skyline, their loss was their first in the conference, dropping their conference record down to 3-1 and their overall record down to 7-4.
The pitchers for both teams better look sharp on Saturday as neither team is afraid to steal. Filer has been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 3.4 stolen bases per game. However, it's not like Skyline struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 5 stolen bases. The only question left is which team can snag more.
