Springfield extended their losing streak to five on Tuesday, dropping them down to 10-8. They were two runs away from ending the streak, but they lost a 10-8 heartbreaker at the hands of the Western Reserve Blue Devils. Unfortunately, that's the second time they've come up short against the Blue Devils this season, as they also lost their prior matchup 12-11 on Monday.
Springfield got a massive performance out of Giuliana Battaglini, who went 2-for-3 with one home run and five RBI. That home run marked the first that Battaglini has launched this season. Another player making a difference was Makenna Wymer, who went 2-for-3 with three runs, one triple, and one double.
As for Western Reserve, they are on a roll lately: they've won four of their last five matchups. That's provided a massive bump to their 9-7 record this season. Those victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 16.4 runs over those games.
On Western Reserve's side, Mara Kale spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered five earned (and three unearned) runs on ten hits.
At the plate, Averie Hendon was a standout: she went 3-for-4 with two RBI, one run, and one double. That's the most hits she has posted over her last 11 contests. The team also got some help courtesy of Sophia Reigle, who went 1-for-4 with two runs, one stolen base, and one RBI.
Looking ahead, Springfield will square off against McDonald at 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday. The Tigers' pitchers better be ready for this one: the Blue Devils have averaged an impressive 7.8 runs per game this season. As for Western Reserve, they will face off against Mineral Ridge at 5:00 p.m. on Monday.
