The New Brighton Lions will head out to square off against the Neshannock Lancers at 6:00 p.m. on Monday. New Brighton is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 8.4 runs per game this season.
New Brighton is coming in off a wild two-game stretch: after soaring to 11 runs last Thursday, they were much more limited against Mohawk Area on Thursday. They fell just short of the Warriors by a score of 2-1. Give some credit to the fans of both teams: the last four times they've met, the home team has come away the winner.
Brock Budacki was huge no matter where he played even without the win. On the mound, he pitched two innings while giving up just one earned run but no hits. He has been consistent: he hasn't given up more than one earned run in five consecutive appearances. He was also big at the plate, getting on base in two of his three plate appearances with two stolen bases.
Budacki wasn't the only one making solid contact as four players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Casey Bloom, who went 1-for-3 with one triple and one run.
Meanwhile, Neshannock entered their tilt with Grove City on Thursday with three consecutive wins, and they'll enter their next game with four. They came within a single run of losing the streak, but they secured a 4-3 W against the Eagles. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest victory the Lancers have posted since March 29th.
Dom Cubellis was incredible, going a perfect 2-for-2 with three RBI, one run, and one double. Another player making a difference was Jake Rynd, who went 1-for-2 with two runs.
Neshannock hit smart and finished the game with only one strikeout. The team has now struck out at least four batters in 12 consecutive matchups.
Neshannock pushed their record up to 13-4 with the win, which was their third straight at home. The home victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.7 runs on average over those games. As for New Brighton, they moved to 9-6 with that loss, which also ended their three-game winning streak.
Monday's game will be a test for both teams' pitchers. New Brighton hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .361. However, it's not like Neshannock struggles in that department as they've averaged .434. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
