Sunnyside and Cienega are an even 5-5 against one another since April of 2015, but likely not for long. The Sunnyside Blue Devils are headed away from home for the first time to challenge the Cienega Bobcats at 5:00 p.m. on Monday. Sunnyside is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 9.8 runs per game this season.
Sunnyside is probably headed into the contest with a chip on their shoulder considering La Habra just ended the team's three-game winning streak on Thursday. They fell just short of the Highlanders by a score of 7-6. The loss was the Blue Devils' first of the season.
Alyssa Gonsalez was cooking despite her team's loss, scoring a run while going 2-for-3. Bianca Cobo also deserves some recognition as she got her first hit of the season.
Even though they lost, Sunnyside was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .458. That was just more of the same: they've now posted a batting average of .308 or higher every time they've taken the field this season.
Meanwhile, it was a proper cat-fight when Cienega faced off against Marana on Friday. Cienega fell just short of Marana by a score of 6-4. The Bobcats have now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.
Kay Morel and Allison Mullen did some serious damage despite the final result: Morel went 1-for-3 with one triple, one run, and one RBI, while Mullen went 1-for-3 with one triple and one run.
Having lost for the first time this season, Sunnyside fell to 3-1. As for Cienega, their defeat dropped their record down to 5-3.
Monday's matchup might come down to which pitcher can control the ball better. Sunnyside has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .559. However, it's not like Cienega struggles in that department as they've averaged .439. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Sunnyside came out on top in a nail-biter against Cienega in their previous meeting back in April of 2022, sneaking past 8-6. Does Sunnyside have another victory up their sleeve, or will Cienega turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
