Even though the Fort Calhoun Pioneers have not done well against the Archbishop Bergan Knights recently (they were 1-8 in their previous nine matchups), they didn't let the past get in their way on Friday. Fort Calhoun came out on top in a nail-biter against Archbishop Bergan and snuck past 36-34. This was payback for Fort Calhoun, who suffered a 58-11 loss the last time these two teams met.
Bria Bench was the offensive standout of the matchup as she dropped a double-double on 12 points and 11 rebounds. Raeann Massey was another key contributor, scoring nine points along with three blocks.
Despite the loss, Archbishop Bergan still got an impressive performance from Mia Cortes, who scored ten points along with five rebounds and three steals. The team also got some help courtesy of Paige Frickenstein, who scored four points along with nine rebounds and four blocks.
Fort Calhoun's victory ended a four-game drought at home dating back to last season and bumped them up to 1-0. As for Archbishop Bergan, they still haven't won a game yet this season and fell to 0-1.
