Custer is 9-1 against Hill City since January of 2019, and they'll have a chance to extend that success on Friday. The Custer Wildcats will head out on the road to square off against the Hill City Rangers at 7:00 p.m. Both teams come into the contest bolstered by wins in their previous matches.
Even though Custer has not done well against Red Cloud recently (they were 1-8 in their previous nine matchups), they didn't let the past get in their way on Friday. Custer skirted past Red Cloud 57-54. The victory made it back-to-back wins for Custer.
Meanwhile, Hill City entered their tilt with Belle Fourche with four consecutive wins but they'll enter their next game with five. Hill City was the clear victor by a 57-35 margin over Belle Fourche. Given Hill City's advantage in MaxPreps' South Dakota basketball rankings (they are ranked 29th, while Belle Fourche is ranked 119th), the result on Tuesday wasn't entirely unexpected.
Custer's win ended a eight-game drought on the road dating back to last season and puts them at 7-3. As for Hill City, they pushed their record up to 8-3 with that win, which was their third straight at home.
Custer came up short against Hill City when the teams last played back in February of 2023, falling 66-53. Can Custer avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
