On Saturday, the University Hawks faced the Wayne Pioneers in a battle between two of the state's top teams. University skirted past the Pioneers 71-69. Having run the score up that high, both teams probably have some extra defensive drills coming up.
Leading University to victory were Hannah Stemple and Bri Fox. Stemple scored 18 points along with two steals, while Fox scored 23 points along with five rebounds. As a matter of fact, that's the most points Fox has scored all season. The team also got some help courtesy of Ella Simpson, who scored nine points along with five rebounds.
When it comes to explaining why Wayne lost, one person who can't be blamed is Brooke Adkins. Despite the final result, she scored 23 points along with six steals and five rebounds. Adkins has been hot recently, having posted 23 or more points the last three times she's played. Mikayla Stacy was another key contributor, scoring ten points along with four steals.
University has been performing well recently as they've won four of their last five matches, which provided a massive bump to their 8-9 record this season. As for Wayne, their loss dropped their record down to 13-1.
Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. University will challenge the Maroon Knights at 7:30 p.m. on Monday. Wheeling Central Catholic will be looking to extend their current four-game winning streak. Wayne is on the road again on Tuesday and plays the Skyhawks at 7:00 p.m. on January 30th. Scott is coming into the contest on a three-game losing streak.
