Eli Luther had another great game (as he tends to do), rushing for 57 yards and one score on only six carries, while also throwing for 68 yards and a pair of TDs. His passing game has become a key predictor of Overton's success: the team is undefeated when his passer rating is 100 or higher, but only 1-2 otherwise. Another player making a difference was Gage Clifton, who rushed for 71 yards and one touchdown.
They were just one part of a punishing run game: Overton was unstoppable on the ground and finished the game with 214 rushing yards. They are a perfect 3-0 when they've run for more than 200 yards.
Overton's defense stepped up as well, laying out the QB three times. Trace Brooks was especially locked on to Bertrand's QB and sacked him twice.
Meanwhile, Cambridge never let their opponents score on Friday. They breezed past Maywood/Hayes Center to the tune of 30-0. The 30-point effort marked the Trojans' lowest-scoring game of the season, but in the end it didn't matter.
A big part of Cambridge's win came down to the chemistry between Micah Gerlach and his top target Brady Ahlemeyer. Gerlach threw for 185 yards and a pair of TDs on only 14 passes while Ahlemeyer gained 143 total yards and three touchdowns. The bulk of those receiving yards came from one huge play: a catch that gained an incredible 62 yards. Krayton Ruggles handled things on the ground, rushing for 85 yards.
Cambridge didn't go easy on the quarterback and picked off two passes before the game was over. In fact, those interceptions all came courtesy of defensive juggernaut Hodge Raburn.
Overton's record now sits at 4-2. As for Cambridge, their record is now 5-1.
Friday's matchup might be decided on the ground. Overton has been unstoppable on the ground this season, having averaged 203.5 rushing yards per game. However, it's not like Cambridge struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 314.8 rushing yards. There's a good chance Friday's contest turns into a tough fight on the ground.
Overton was able to grind out a solid victory over Cambridge in their previous matchup back in October of 2024, winning 40-32. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Eagles since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
