Football Recap: Lakewood Piles Up the Points Against Clearwater Central Catholic

It can be hard to translate regular season success to the playoffs, but Lakewood had no problem doing just that on Monday. They simply couldn't be stopped as they easily beat the Clearwater Central Catholic Marauders 44-0. The Spartans' offense stepped up their game for this one, as that was the most points they've scored all season.

Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Lakewood to victory, but perhaps none more so than Dajia Rogers, who threw for 250 yards and four TDs while picking up 12.5 yards per attempt, and also rushed for 45 yards. Those four passing touchdowns gave Rogers a new career-high. Lakewood's leading receiver Zy'Neka Dean was Rogers' top target yet again, picking up 90 receiving yards and three scores.

Rogers was just one part of a punishing run game: Lakewood was unstoppable on the ground and finished the game with 235 rushing yards. The team's really been improving in that area: they've now improved their rushing yard total in three consecutive matches.

Another reason for the win was Lakewood's imposing defense, which managed to get into the backfield for four sacks. Ra' Vonnie King was especially locked on to Clearwater Central Catholic's QB and sacked her twice. Jessani Wilkins got in on the action too, converting a pick into a touchdown.

Lakewood has been performing well recently as they've won four of their last five games. That's provided a massive bump to their 6-6 record this season. The victories came thanks in part to their defensive effort, having only surrendered 6.8 points on average over those games. As for Clearwater Central Catholic, they are on a five-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 2-8.

Coming up, Lakewood will square off against Keswick Christian at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. The Spartans' defense better be ready for this one: the Crusaders have averaged an impressive 27.5 points per game this season. Clearwater Central Catholic does not have any more games scheduled as of now.
