Baseball Game Preview: Broughton Capitals vs. Athens Drive Jaguars

The Broughton Capitals will venture away from home to challenge the Athens Drive Jaguars at 4:30 p.m. on Monday. Given that the two teams suffered a loss in their last games, they both have a little extra motivation heading into this contest.

Broughton blew Holly Springs out of the water the last time the pair played, but on Friday Holly Springs got their revenge. The Capitals fell just short of the Golden Hawks by a score of 6-4.

Gray Veit was a force to be reckoned with on the mound despite the final result: he didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only one hit over 4.2 innings pitched. He has been nothing but reliable: he hasn't given up more than one hit in three consecutive appearances.

On the hitting side, Broughton saw six different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was John T Jones, who went 2-for-3 with one run and one RBI.

Meanwhile, Athens Drive scored first but ultimately less than Cardinal Gibbons in their matchup on Wednesday. They lost 8-2 to the Crusaders.

Broughton's defeat dropped their record down to 12-9. As for Athens Drive, they have been struggling recently as they've lost six of their last eight games. That's put a noticeable dent in their 12-10 record this season.

The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Monday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. Broughton has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 7.2 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like Athens Drive struggles in that department as they've been averaging 6.7 strikeouts. Considering how easily both teams rack up Ks, the hitters on both teams better bring their A-game into this one.

Broughton was able to grind out a solid win over Athens Drive when the teams last played back in April of 2024, winning 4-1. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Capitals since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
