Covenant Christian is 0-6-1 against Mooresville since April of 2015 but things could change on Saturday. The Warriors will look to defend their home field against the Pioneers at 10:00 a.m. Both teams are coming into the match red-hot, with Covenant Christian sitting on five straight victories and Mooresville on three.
Covenant Christian saw some tournament action on Friday. They narrowly escaped with a win as the squad sidled past Heritage Christian 7-6.
Eli Kegeris made a splash no matter where he played. He looked comfortable on the mound, keeping things locked down with no earned runs or hits over six innings pitched. He has been consistent recently: he hasn't given up more than one earned run in four consecutive appearances. He was also solid in the batter's box, going 2-for-3 with two RBI and one run.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Blake Cope, who went 1-for-3 with one triple and one run.
Meanwhile, Mooresville earned a 5-2 victory over Greenfield-Central on Thursday.
Like Covenant Christian, Mooresville also got a great game from a two-way player: Liam Delp. On the mound, he didn't allow a single earned run over seven innings pitched. Delp was also big at the plate, going 1-for-3 with one stolen base and two RBI.
In other batting news, Tyler Denny was excellent, going 2-for-3 with two stolen bases and two runs. Another player making a difference was Brody McGaha, who went 1-for-2 with one stolen base, two RBI, and one run.
Covenant Christian's win was their third straight at home, which pushed their record up to 12-6. The home victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 3.3 runs on average over those games. As for Mooresville, their win bumped their record up to 11-6.
The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Saturday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. Covenant Christian has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 7.8 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like Mooresville struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 8.5 strikeouts. Considering how easily both teams rack up Ks, the hitters on both teams better bring their A-game into this one.
Covenant Christian couldn't quite finish off Mooresville when the teams last played back in April of 2024 and fell 5-3. Can the Warriors avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
