Baseball Recap: Smith County Wins Going Away Against Monterey

After losing to Monterey the last time they met, Smith County decided to demonstrate that turnabout is fair play. The Owls put the hurt on the Wildcats with a sharp 12-2 victory on Tuesday. For those keeping track at home, that's the biggest win the Owls have posted against the Wildcats since April 7, 2017.

Bennett Gammon was a major factor while hitting and pitching. He struck out 11 batters over five innings while giving up just one earned (and one unearned) run off three hits. He has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts in three consecutive appearances. He was also big at the plate, scoring a run and stealing four bases while going 3-for-3. Those four stolen bases gave him a new career-high.

In other batting news, Morgan Sinclair was incredible, scoring two runs and stealing a base while going 3-for-3. What's more, he posted three RBI, the most he's had since back in April of 2024. Max Long was another key player, going 2-for-3 with one double and one RBI.

Smith County always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .548. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Monterey only posted an OBP of .250.

The victory made it two in a row for Smith County and bumps their season record up to 12-3. Those wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 9.5 runs over those games. As for Monterey, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 6-8.

Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Smith County will venture away from home to take on Upperman at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday. As for Monterey, they will take on Midway at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday. The Wildcats' pitchers better be ready for this one: the Green Wave have averaged an impressive 6.9 runs per game this season.
