After flying high against the Columbus Blue Devils last Wednesday, the Dougherty Trojans came back down to earth. Dougherty fell 59-48 to Monroe on Friday. While losing is never fun, Dougherty can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Georgia basketball rankings (they are ranked 60th, while Monroe is ranked 18th).
When it comes to explaining why Dougherty lost, one person who can't be blamed is Kaleke Singletary-Jinks. Despite the final result, he scored 15 points. Singletary-Jinks continues to roll, besting his previous point total in each of the last three games he's played. Another player making a difference was Jaion Burns, who scored 12 points.
Monroe's win was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from Lorenzo Still, who scored 22 points along with four steals. Justin Burns was another key contributor, scoring 18 points along with seven rebounds and two blocks.
Dougherty's loss ended a three-game streak of away wins and brought them to 11-6. As for Monroe, the victory (which was their 11th in a row) raised their record to 13-2.
Dougherty will square off against Early County at 2:30 p.m. on Monday. Hopefully Early County focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 14 last Wednesday. As for Monroe, they will look to defend their home court on Monday against Calhoun County at 7:30 p.m. One thing working in Calhoun County's favor is that they have posted big point totals in their last seven games.
