Softball Recap: West Mesa Has No Trouble Against Rio Grande

West Mesa won the last time they faced Rio Grande and things went their way on Tuesday too. The Mustangs were the clear victors by a 16-5 margin over the Ravens. The result was nothing new for the Mustangs, who have now won nine contests by eight runs or more so far this season.

The team relied heavily on Ellie Padilla, who went a perfect 3-for-3 with one home run, three stolen bases, and five RBI. She has been hot, having posted at least one stolen base the last six times she's played. Another player making a difference was Trinity 'Toots' Bazan, who got on base in all four of her plate appearances with four RBI, two runs, and one double.

West Mesa was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .500. That was just more of the same: they've now posted a batting average of .379 or higher in nine consecutive matches.

West Mesa's victory was their first in the district, bumping their district record up to 1-3 and their overall record up to 9-13. As for Rio Grande, they have traveled a rocky road recently, having lost six of their last eight games. That's put a noticeable dent in their 6-11 record this season.

West Mesa will head out to challenge Albuquerque at 3:30 p.m. on Friday. The Mustangs' pitchers better be ready for this one: the Bulldogs have averaged an impressive 9.4 runs per game this season. As for Rio Grande, they will be playing in front of their home fans against Albuquerque Academy at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday.
