NFL Hall of Fame cornerback Deion Sanders is making the jump from high school assistant to college head coach. Jackson State University announced Monday that the former multi-sport star would take over its program ahead of a planned spring 2021 season.
Sanders has spent the last three seasons as offensive coordinator at Trinity Christian (Cedar Hill, Texas)
, leading the Tigers to a 42-3 record (including four games in 2020) and three consecutive private school state titles.
Coach Prime's son, Shedeur
, has starred for those teams at quarterback. The four-star Florida Atlantic pledge threw for 3,477 yards and 47 touchdowns in 14 games as a sophomore. No word yet on if this development will change his college plans.
Jackson State went 4-8 in 2019 and hasn't won a conference title since 2007. But several legends of the game called the Mississippi program home in college, including Walter Payton, Jackie Slater and Jimmy Smith.
