The Camp Verde Cowboys had already won four in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 38.8 points), and they went ahead and made it five on Friday. They claimed a resounding 68-24 win over Highland Prep on the road. The result was nothing new for Camp Verde, who have now won seven matches by 20 points or more so far this season.
Camp Verde's win was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Tyson Buckley, who threw for 299 yards and four touchdowns while completing 71.4% of his passes, and also punched in a touchdown on the ground. Buckley is on a roll when it comes to passing touchdowns, as he's now passed for three or more in the last eight games he's played. Jordan Williams also deserves a shout-out for his two touchdowns.
Highland Prep's lost despite a true team effort on the offense, the best among them being Isaiah Gomez, who picked up 170 receiving yards and three touchdowns. Gomez was no stranger to the big play, cutting upfield for a catch that went for 65 yards. Another player making a difference was Gil Camacho, who threw for 264 yards and four touchdowns.
Camp Verde's victory was their third straight on the road, which bumped their overall record up to 7-2. They've been dominating during the games in that stretch too, as they've won by an average of 40 points. As for Highland Prep, they are on a three-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 2-7.
Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Camp Verde will take on Bisbee at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. That game will pit two of the most dominant signal callers against one another: Sebastian Lopez and Buckley. As for Highland Prep, they will be playing at home against Mountainside at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday. Mountainside comes in on a streak of failing to score more than eight points in their last five games, a trend the team is of course eager to reverse.
