Each year since 2006, MaxPreps has recognized outstanding performers in high school basketball. America's source for high school sports continues the tradition to close out the 2022-23 season by naming the top player in each state. Selections are based on team success and individual excellence in addition to local and state accolades.
D.J. Wagner of
Camden is the 2022-23 MaxPreps New Jersey High School Basketball Player of the Year. The 6-foot-3 senior guard led the Panthers to a 23-2 record and the No. 5 spot in the MaxPreps Top 25 at the time of his selection.
Wagner averaged 22.5 points, 3.3 rebounds and 3.0 assists per game this season. He scored a career-high 40 points in back-to-back games last month on the way to making his family the first to have three generations pass the 2,000-point threshold. He joins grandfather Milt and father Dajuan – who both played in the NBA – on the vaunted point plateau.
