West Charlotte hasn't had much luck against Hopewell recently, but that could start to change on Tuesday. The West Charlotte Lions will welcome the Hopewell Titans at 5:30 p.m. West Charlotte is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 11.2 runs per game this season.
West Charlotte's pitching crew heads into the match hoping to repeat the dominance they displayed on Thursday. They put the hurt on West Mecklenburg with a sharp 17-0 victory. The win continues a trend for the Lions in their matchups with the Hawks: they've now won six in a row.
Enijah Gary was a major factor no matter where she played. She struck out eight batters over 2.2 innings while giving up no earned runs or hits (and only one walk). Gary was also stellar in the batter's box, getting on base in all three of her plate appearances with one home run, two stolen bases, and two runs. That home run was her first of the season.
In other batting news, Taylor B was a standout: she scored three runs and stole Four bases. while getting on base in all three of her plate appearances. Victelle M was another key player, scoring two runs and stealing Three bases. while getting on base in all three of her plate appearances.
Meanwhile, Hopewell didn't have quite enough to beat South Mecklenburg on Monday and fell 5-4.
Ellie Wicks spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered four earned (and one unearned) runs on six hits.
On the hitting side, Kori West made the most of her time at bat despite the final result and scored a run while going 3-for-5. Another player making a difference was Paityn Gilchrist, who went 2-for-3 with one RBI.
Even though they lost, Hopewell kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 11 hits. This was only their first loss (out of three games) when they post 11 or more hits.
Hopewell's loss dropped their record down to 3-3. As for West Charlotte, they now have a winning record of 3-2.
Tuesday's contest might come down to which pitcher can control the ball better. West Charlotte has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .592. However, it's not like Hopewell struggles in that department as they've averaged .500. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
West Charlotte might still be hurting after the 20-5 defeat they got from Hopewell when the teams last played back in April of 2024. Can West Charlotte avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
