After a string of five wins, Mercer's good fortune finally ran out on Tuesday. They fell just short of the Hickory Hornets by a score of 3-2. The Mustangs were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Hornets apparently hadn't forgotten their loss the last time these teams played back in October of 2024.
Mercer took a 2-1 lead headed into the fourth set, but sadly they lost the next two. The match finished with set scores of 25-19, 16-25, 21-25, 25-13, 15-11.
Ainsley Baldwin paced Mercer's offense, picking up 17 kills. Baldwin got some help from Farren Baldwin and her 15 assists. Farren was also solid from the service line: she led the team with five aces.
Mercer's defeat was their first in the conference, dropping their conference record down to 4-1 and their overall record down to 9-2. As for Hickory, the win made it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 7-3.
Coming up, Mercer will square off against Franklin at 7:15 p.m. on Thursday. As for Hickory, they will be playing in front of their home fans against Eisenhower at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday.
