III Section I recap Oct. 16, 2012
Williams Field extended the longest winning streak in III Section I this week by beating Vista Grande, 42-0. The victory was the eighth in a row for the team.
Williams Field suffered a letdown when it was bounced from the state Top 25 this week after beating the Spartans. Steve Campbell's team had been ranked 23rd, but fell to 26.
Maricopa's dynamic duo of CALEB BUCK and KENTRELL COLEMAN proved tough for Casa Grande to stop, as they were the top passer and receiver in the league this week. BUCK threw for 289 yards and five touchdowns and COLEMAN had 127 yards receiving. TIM BYRD helped Maricopa's passing attack out by catching four balls for 96 yards.
Ryder McIntyre was the most productive running back in the league this week. In 15 carries, he ran for 192 yards as the Cougars topped the Cougars. Teammate Lane Reister added to the ground attack by rushing for 18 yards.
Logan Johns made the biggest impact on defense this week as Higley lost to Seton Catholic. The 6-foot-2 junior racked up one sack.
6-foot-1 quarterback BUCK of Maricopa is the league leader in passing yards this season with 1336. He has also thrown 15 touchdowns. On the ground, Queen Creek's Matt Guida has rushed for 1492 yards which leads the league. The leading receiver in the league this season is Matt Bushman. The Sabino star has 27 catches for 720 yards.
Sahuarita's Chris Snodgrass is a mere 20 yards away from breaking the 1,000-rushing-yards mark for the season. Snodgrass has rushed for 980 yards on 118 carries so far this year.
A big matchup in III Section I this week will be when the Black Hawks take on Poston Butte. Williams Field is currently in first, while the Broncos are in eighth.
Sabino took down Santa Rita 67-0 last week, the largest margin of any game. Lee Holland threw for 86 yards and three touchdowns and ran for one yards in the win.
