Moapa Valley is 7-1 against Sports Leadership & Management since April of 2021 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Wednesday. The Pirates will face off against the Bulls at 4:00 p.m. Both come into the matchup bolstered by wins in their previous matches.
Moapa Valley is on a roll after a high-stakes playoff matchup on Monday. They put the hurt on The Meadows School with a sharp 18-3 victory. The result was nothing new for the Pirates, who have now won 13 contests by seven runs or more so far this season.
Saphire Holm made a big impact while hitting and pitching. On the mound, she tossed two innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. Holm was also solid in the batter's box, going a perfect 2-for-2 with two stolen bases, two runs, and one RBI.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Gracy Fullman, who went a perfect 3-for-3 with four RBI, two runs, and one triple. Emmy Cornwall was another key player, going a perfect 2-for-2 with two stolen bases, three runs, and one RBI.
Moapa Valley always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .846. That was just more of the same: they've now posted an OBP of .500 or higher in eight consecutive games.
Meanwhile, Sports Leadership & Management had already won three in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 17 runs) and they went ahead and made it four on Tuesday. They walked away with a 7-2 win over the Knights.
Like Moapa Valley, Sports Leadership & Management also got a great game from a two-way player: Mya Schweisthal. She looked comfortable on the mound, striking out 11 batters over seven innings while giving up just one earned (and one unearned) run off eight hits (and not a single walk). Schweisthal has been consistent for a while: she hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts in 12 consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, going a perfect 2-for-2 with two runs.
Schweisthal wasn't the only one making solid contact as seven players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Lexi St. Pierre, who went 2-for-4 with two runs. Another was Naima Ralston, who went 1-for-3 with one run and one RBI.
Moapa Valley is on a roll lately: they've won nine of their last ten matches. That's provided a nice bump to their 19-5 record this season. The victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 14.4 runs over those games. As for Sports Leadership & Management, their win was their tenth straight at home dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 20-3.
Wednesday's contest might come down to which pitcher can control the ball better. Moapa Valley has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .637. However, it's not like Sports Leadership & Management struggles in that department as they've averaged .657. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Moapa Valley couldn't quite finish off Sports Leadership & Management in their previous matchup back in March and fell 6-4. Can the Pirates avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
