Henry-led Putnam City Squeaks Past Rival
Xavier Henry didn't seem to show any rust after many Oklahoma schools were forced off the hardwood due to winter weather. The 6-6 sophomore led the defending Class 6A state champions with 33 points in a thrilling 79-77 victory over upstart Putnam City North.
Dennon Mitchell and Reimond Prince did their best to help PC North pull a massive upset. Mitchell, a junior, scored 29 points to lead the Panthers while Prince chipped in with 20 points.
Demeatrice Young added 22 points to pace Putnam City, who moved to 11-1 with the victory. The following evening, Putnam City defeated Mustang 95-59. PC North fell to 8-2 on the season, with their only two losses coming to Putnam City.
Star Spencer Emerging as All-City Frontrunner
The Oklahoma City All-City Conference might be the toughest in the state. On Tuesday, Star Spencer proved they will be a major force down the stretch in Class 4A as they defeated Class 2A defending champion Millwood, 65-62.
Star Spencer moved to snapped a two-game losing streak and moved to 8-2 on the season with the victory. Josh Davis led Bobcats with 17 points and nine rebounds in the victory. Star Spencer used a 27-8 run which allowed them to take a 45-42 advantage late in the third period.
Along with Star Spencer and Millwood, Southeast (4A), Douglass (4A), U.S. Grant (6A), Capitol Hill (5A), John Marshall (5A), and Northeast (4A) are all highly-regarded in their respective classes.
Southeast, Capitol Hill, and John Marshall all qualified for the Class 5A state tournament last season. Douglass and Northeast qualified for state in 4A, with Douglass losing in overtime to Bishop McGuinness in the state final.
This season, John Marshall lost narrowly to Bishop McGuinness by two at the McGuinness Festival.
And to display just how powerful the All-City Conference is from top to bottom, Northeast was shocked on Jan. 23 by dropping a 87-77 decision to Northwest Classen. It was the second conference win of the season for Northwest, who feature a quick line-up with no player taller than 6-1.
