Southwood has gone 9-1 against Northfield recently and they'll look to pad the win column further on Thursday. The Knights will square off against the Norsemen at 6:30 p.m. The two teams each escaped (but just barely!) with wins against their previous opponents.
Southwood is on a roll after a high-stakes playoff matchup on Monday. They had just enough and edged out Wes-Del 3-2.
Natalie Sutphin spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered just two earned runs on eight hits. She has been consistent for a while: she hasn't given up more than two walks in 24 consecutive appearances.
At the plate, the team relied heavily on Izzy Ashba, who went 2-for-3 with two RBI, one run, and one double.
Meanwhile, Northfield had to endure a 13-game losing streak, but that streak is no more. They narrowly escaped with a win as the squad sidled past Daleville 8-7. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest victory the Norsemen have posted since May 4, 2024.
Emma Warnock made a splash no matter where she played. She tossed seven innings while giving up five earned (and two unearned) runs off 11 hits. Warnock was also big at the plate, going 4-for-5 with one run. That's the most hits she has posted since back in April.
In other batting news, Bella Myers was incredible, going 2-for-4 with one home run, two RBI, and one double. Another player making a difference was Samantha Powell, who went 2-for-4 with two RBI, one run, and one double.
Northfield kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 14 hits. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now got at least eight hits in four consecutive games.
Southwood has been performing well recently as they've won four of their last five matches. That's provided a nice bump to their 17-10 record this season. The wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 9.2 runs over those games. As for Northfield, their victory bumped their record up to 3-17.
Northfield's pitching crew has a crucial task ahead of them: Southwood has been making plenty of contact this season, having averaged 9.2 hits per game. It's a different story for Northfield, though, as they've been averaging 12.1 hits. Given Southwood's sizable advantage in that area, the Norsemen will need to find a way to close that gap.
Southwood took their win against Northfield in their previous meeting two weeks ago by a conclusive 10-1 score. Do the Knights have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Norsemen turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
