The Bishop Brossart Mustangs will face off against the Villa Madonna Vikings at 4:30 p.m. on Monday. The last three games Bishop Brossart has played have been within two runs, so don't be surprised if it's a close one.
While Bishop Brossart's victory against Scott wasn't quite the blowout it was the last time the pair played, they still came out on top. The Mustangs skirted past the Eagles 11-10. While the Mustangs didn't have the best season last year (they finished 12-19), it's starting to look like those struggles are a thing of the past.
Anna Bezold spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered four earned (and five unearned) runs on 14 hits. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than one walk in five consecutive appearances.
On the hitting side, Leah Robinson was a standout: she went 3-for-4 with three RBI and one double. That's the most RBI she has posted since back in March. The team also got some help courtesy of Rachel Shewmaker, who got on base in four of her five plate appearances with three runs.
Meanwhile, there's no place like home for Villa Madonna, who bounced back after a loss on the road last Tuesday. They put the hurt on Holmes with a sharp 15-2 win on Tuesday. The result was nothing new for the Vikings, who have now won four matchups by eight runs or more so far this season.
Cam Kratzer made a splash while hitting and pitching. She didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only one hit while striking out 12 over 4.1 innings pitched. Kratzer was also solid in the batter's box, going 2-for-3 with two RBI and one double.
In other batting news, Villa Madonna got a big performance out of Rosemary Rice, who got on base in four of her five plate appearances with three RBI and two runs. Kate Gibbs was another key player, earning one RBI, two runs, and three stolen bases.
Villa Madonna always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .641. They are 5-2 when they post an OBP of .513 or better.
Villa Madonna's victory bumped their record up to 6-4. As for Bishop Brossart, their win bumped their record up to 12-3-1.
Monday's game might come down to which pitcher can control the ball better. Bishop Brossart has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .465. However, it's not like Villa Madonna struggles in that department as they've averaged .573. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Bishop Brossart couldn't quite get it done against Villa Madonna when the teams last played back in May of 2024 as they fell 10-7. Can the Mustangs avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
