Yorktown and Wes-Del are an even 4-4 against one another since February of 2015, but not for long. The Yorktown Tigers will be taking part in a tournament against the Wes-Del Warriors at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday. Yorktown has now lost seven straight, leaving the team hunting for their first win since December 6.
Last Thursday, Yorktown took a blow against Anderson, falling 81-53. While losing is never fun, the Tigers can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Indiana basketball rankings (they are ranked 204th, while the Indians are ranked 32nd).
Despite their loss, Yorktown saw several players rise to the challenge and make noteworthy plays. Connor Rowray, who posted 11 points, was perhaps the best of all. The team also got some help courtesy of Jabin Barnes, who earned 12 points and five rebounds.
Meanwhile, Wes-Del was able to grind out a solid win over Tri-Central on Saturday, taking the game 58-50.
Wes-Del's win came from a few key players Yorktown will need to keep an eye on. One of the most notable was Julian Carpenter, who had 19 points and six rebounds. Another player making a difference was Gabriel Becerra, who went 5 of 9 on his way to 14 points.
Wes-Del's victory ended a four-game drought on the road and puts them at 5-5. As for Yorktown, their defeat dropped their record down to 3-7.
Rebounding is likely to be a big factor in this contest: Yorktown has been smashing the glass this season, having averaged 20.2 rebounds per game. However, it's not like Wes-Del struggles in that department as they've been averaging 27.1 boards. With both teams battling to corral missed shots, we'll see if one team can grab an edge.
Yorktown didn't have too much breathing room in their contest against Wes-Del in their previous matchup back in February of 2020, but they still walked away with an 80-74 win. Does Yorktown have another victory up their sleeve, or will Wes-Del turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
