The Melrose-Mindoro Mustangs lost against the Sparta Spartans back in December of 2019, and unfortunately they wound up with the same result on Thursday. Melrose-Mindoro had to suffer through a rough 79-41 loss at the hands of Sparta. Melrose-Mindoro has not had much luck with Sparta recently, as the team's come up short the last two times they've met.
Sparta's victory was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Gavin Rhead, who scored 19 points along with nine rebounds and five blocks. Those five blocks set a new season-high mark for him. Another player making a difference was Owen Berendes, who scored 17 points along with five steals.
Melrose-Mindoro's defeat dropped their record down to 5-4. As for Sparta, their win ended a three-game drought on the road and puts them at 3-6.
Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Melrose-Mindoro will square off against Pepin/Alma at 7:15 p.m. on Thursday. Pepin/Alma is coming into the contest on a four-game losing streak. Sparta and Onalaska will face off at 7:15 p.m. on January 2, 2024 without much rest after finishing up games yesterday. Onalaska knows how to get points on the board -- the team has finished with flashy point totals in its past eight contests -- so hopefully Sparta likes a good challenge.
